One of our most read posts continues to be ‘Choosing the best areas of Edinburgh for Young Families.’ This probably shouldn’t be surprising considering the Edinburgh really is an incredibly place for families – whether you have toddlers, young children, or even teens – it can be really hard to pick an area when there is so many variables. So we thought we would shine a spotlight on the different areas by interviewing some local residents and helping you to pick. Today’s focus is of course: Stockbridge.

Education is a top priority for many parents when considering a place to settle down. For babies and toddlers, there are number of excellent nurseries in Stockbridge itself – Arbor Green is particularly well-regarded and as per many Edinburgh nurseries, it can be hard to get a place so do plan ahead. I looked for a place about 6 months before I needed one and this was too late for several local options!
For older children, Stockbridge is home to several esteemed state schools – including Stockbridge Primary and Flora Stevensons – both feeder schools for Broughton High School. However, there are also Private options such as the Edinburgh Academy, with Erskine Stewart’s Melville School also a stones throw away. Both state and private options, have a strong focus on academic excellence, with each offering their own unique focus.
2. Safety and Security
Stockbridge prides itself on being a safe and secure neighborhood within the bustling city of Edinburgh. With low crime rates and a close-knit community, parents can have peace of mind knowing their children are growing up in a welcoming environment. Home to many different bars and restaurants, Stockbridge is often busy well into the evening and always feels like a safe place to be.

For coffee lovers, whilst there is a number of big brand establishments such as Cafe Nero, Starbucks, and Costa, there are countless independent options: top tip – Soderberg has the best cinnamon buns and the newly established Twelve Triangles has some amazing cake options!

From the lively Stockbridge Market to the festive Santa Parade there is always something happening to bring the community together. It is well served by several bus routes – including the 24, 29, and 36 – and now Edinburgh has a tram to the airport, it’s possible to take the 24 from Stockbridge straight to the tram link. Within a short distance, families can visit popular destinations like Edinburgh Castle, the National Museum of Scotland, and the Edinburgh Zoo.
