For any aspiring witches, wizards, or even magical creatures, Edinburgh is a haven of enchantment. The city’s historic Old Town, with its ancient cobblestones and mysterious alleyways, feels like it’s straight out of a Harry Potter novel. When The Cauldron shifted its focus to Potions Cocktail classes, the Department of Magic stepped up to create a whimsical afternoon tea experience that is also family/kid friendly. This new offering is perfect for young Harry Potter enthusiasts and their families, bringing the magic of the wizarding world to life in the heart of Edinburgh.

Discover the Enchantment at the Department of Magic

As you step into the Department of Magic, you are instantly transported into a realm of enchantment. The Magic Potions Tavern, where the afternoon tea is served, is adorned with mystical decor and atmospheric lighting that make it feel like you’ve wandered into Diagon Alley. With aged walls, it has Leaky Cauldron vibes more than the Ministry of Magic – and you’ll notice some familiar Potter related drinks on the menu.

Indulgent Delights for Every Taste

The afternoon tea menu is a carefully curated assortment of sweet and savoury treats. Expect a good array of scones, sandwiches, tarts and some more unexpected ‘smoking delights.’ If you can’t finish everything, you can always ask for things to be boxed or wash it all down with a butter beer (be warned this is for those with a major sweet tooth only!)

a flask of red liquid sits to the left and a glowing light is in the background.

Sourced from Local Suppliers

We believe in supporting the culinary magic happening in Edinburgh, and we were happy to note that the Department of Magic made a point of using local supplies. Not everything that comes from Scotland is Haggis based, and this gives you a great opportunity to find out more of what Edinburgh has to offer on the food front.

Perfect Location in the Heart of Edinburgh

The Department of Magic is conveniently located just a short walk from Waverley Station in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. The cobbled streets and historic buildings provide the perfect backdrop for your wizarding adventure, just a stone’s throw from the iconic Edinburgh Castle. There are a bunch of Harry Potter related places within an easy walking distance so it’s very easy to extend the magic!

Ready to Book Your Wizard Afternoon Tea in Edinburgh?

Advanced bookings are required for all Magical Afternoon Tea experiences at the Department of Magic. Spaces are limited and afternoon tea is only available Thursday-Sunday at set times. Expect to pay £25 per person but don’t worry – that’s British pounds not Galleons.

Extra Adventures: Escape Rooms for All Ages

In addition to the magical afternoon tea, the Department of Magic also offers two escape rooms, both suitable for children. I originally tried the ‘Prophecies Quest’ with a friend, which was perfect for both a novice like me and my ‘seasoned’ escape room companion. Although she has recently confessed to being defeated by a room elsewhere, I have to confess I think I would’ve been stuck without her! I enjoyed it so much that I returned with my daughter Kate to tackle the ‘Dark Lord Resurrection.’ Although Kate is a true Gryffindor, she embraced her inner Slytherin for this adventure, and we had an absolute blast.

So whether you’re a local or a visitor, the Department of Magic’s wizard afternoon tea in Edinburgh is a must-do for any Harry Potter fan. It’s a delightful and immersive experience that combines the best of Edinburgh’s culinary delights with a touch of magical charm. Book your spot today and get ready to be enchanted!
