Let’s be honest – Edinburgh’s weather can turn on you faster than your toddler when you cut their toast into squares instead of triangles. One minute it’s a lovely spring morning, the next the rain’s horizontal, the wind’s doing its best impression of a leaf blower, and you’re staring out the window wondering how on earth you’ll entertain the kids without resorting to 100 straight episodes of Bluey (as brilliant as it is).
So here’s a list of rainy day rescues – places to go and things to do when the weather is just not playing ball. All tested (and mostly survived) by me – a parent who has been there and snack-packed that.
Indoor Adventures in Edinburgh
1. Joy Tots – Leith/Trinity
Joy Tots is the kind of place that makes you breathe a sigh of relief as soon as you walk in. It’s light, friendly, and (bless them) understands what it’s like to be a knackered parent in need of coffee and five minutes while your child goes wild in a safe, clean play area.
There’s a café serving up decent food, plus a shop full of gorgeous bits and bobs, and drop-in craft activities that are perfect when your little one is just about ready to implode with pent-up energy.

2. Turtle Dove Play Café – Davidson Mains
Turtle Dove is the definition of a hidden gem. Tucked away in what looks like a standard café front is a full-blown soft play haven. We’re talking ball pits, tunnels, slides – and that’s just for the ‘big’ kids.
There’s also a sensory area for babies, a mini kitchen for role play, a reading nook with beanbags, and a full train and car setup. It’s like five playgroups rolled into one – but with coffee. And cake.

🕒 Open daily 9:00 – 3:30

3. Little Farmers at Craigies Farm – Kirkliston
Yes, it’s technically a farm – but the indoor and outdoor mix makes it perfect for patchy days. The indoor play barn is brilliant for burning off steam, and when the rain lets up, you can head outside to meet the animals or explore the outdoor adventure zones.
There’s also farm-fresh food that’ll beat soggy chips any day, and it’s a great option when you’ve got mixed ages to entertain. Bonus: the pigs don’t mind the rain.

4. National Museum of Scotland – Central Edinburgh (FREE!)
If you’ve not yet braved the National Museum of Scotland with your little ones, rainy days are the perfect excuse. It’s free (praise be), massive, and genuinely interesting for all ages. From animals to aeroplanes, dinosaurs to dollhouses – it’s a glorious mishmash of exhibits with plenty of hands-on stuff.
I’ve done a full review of the National Museum of Scotland here if you want the lowdown, but trust me – it’s one of the few places where I feel smugly educational and semi-dry at the same time.

5. Almond Valley Heritage Park – Livingston
Not technically Edinburgh, but a short drive and totally worth it for a proper day out. Almond Valley is a blend of indoor soft play, museums, animals, and undercover outdoor areas. It’s ideal when the forecast is “four seasons in a day”.
There’s loads of space, hands-on history exhibits, and just enough mud to feel like you’ve had a rural adventure without fully committing to a downpour.

6. National Museum of Flight – East Fortune
Ok, yes, planes might seem like something for hobbyists – but my kids loved it. Giant hangars full of aircraft, loads of buttons to press, and a surprisingly child-friendly approach to museums. The exhibits are hands-on and spacious (no whispering “don’t touch!” every five seconds), and there’s enough variety to suit most attention spans.
Word of warning: café options are limited – pack a lunch or you might end up with jalapeño crisps and regret.

Rainy Day Ideas for Home
Because sometimes it’s just not worth it. Here are some indoor wins from our house:
Window Art & Easy Painting
- Chubbi Paint Markers – Bright, chunky, and mostly mess-free. Fab for little hands and early mark making.
- STABILO Woody 3-in-1 pencils – These magical things work on glass, tables, windows – even fridges. Wipe off with a damp cloth and it’s like the chaos never happened. Fun for toddlers and teens (who let’s be honest, secretly enjoy being allowed to “draw on the furniture”).
Stress-Free (ish) Baking
My kids love baking. I, however, like edible results and not wrestling over a single whisk. Enter: the Casdon Joseph Joseph mini baking set. We got it originally as a toy but it’s sturdy enough for actual use. Everyone gets their own bowl/roller/whisk and we bake side-by-side like the wholesome family we pretend to be on Instagram.
Perfect for ages 2–4, and bits of it still get used now mine are older. It’s like soft play for your kitchen – but with cookies.
Final Thoughts (and a Hot Coffee)
Rainy days in Edinburgh don’t have to mean cabin fever or screen-induced eye strain. Whether you fancy braving the wind for a bit of soft play, making art on your windows, or bonding over badly whisked cake mix – there’s plenty to keep everyone sane(ish).
