Throwback Friday... when the snow started falling Throwback Friday... when the snow started falling this week Thomas said ‘oh it’s Christmas again!’ . Obviously, we had no snow at Christmas but somewhere the two have cemented in his mind. . AD - Do you have a favorite restaurant? There is s AD - Do you have a favorite restaurant? There is such variety in Edinburgh’s foodie culture, I’m not sure I could narrow it down to just one - I have brunch spots, places for a light lunch, date nights, family celebrations... the list goes on. . So when I found out about Gousto’s Cookstarter campaign to protect the UK’s diverse food scene - I really had to think! Gousto are on the hunt for five independent restaurants across the UK to award £10,000 of funding, and a year-long programme of marketing, mentorship and coaching to ensure our favourite independents are here to stay... But they need our help to nominate our favorites...! . So I asked my kids and unsurprisingly - they both said @theperched. The welcome there is always so warm and well, their seasonal menu is epic - prioritising sourcing fresh, local produce and making the most of those natural flavours. . With the lockdown restrictions here in Scotland, The Perch decided that it was safer for their staff to not open for takeaway. But before lockdown I dropped in on the most miserable day and was entirely revitalised by the mushroom risotto so thankfully the Head Chef - Denny - helped me recreate it at home! . The kids were happy - but I still think I prefer Denny’s version! So, I’m nominating The Perch for @Goustocooking ’s Cookstarter in the hope that it will result in more of you getting to discover their food too! . Trying to remember when I last went into an actual Trying to remember when I last went into an actual bookshop. Usually books are my escape, my way of grounding, the place I can find calm. In this lockdown though I seem to have no time - it just feels so chaotic without every leaving the house. . I’m trying to hook into the seasons and thinking that this time will pass, the spring (and longer days will arrive), and with that new season there will also be a new energy. I haven’t posted this week as I really wanted to finish the series (I didn’t have time to go before today)... but I’m also really not sure what I should be posting right now. . Days go by and I don’t actually leave the house at the moment and even when I do it’s usually just for a run. I took a break for a few days, not because I plann I took a break for a few days, not because I planned to, or because I even wanted to... but I wanted to finish revisiting the locations from my top 9 of 2020 and just well... home school, online teaching, lock down etc!! . We started back at school for a couple of days this week (online) - queue tears, tech disasters, and impending exhaustion! Thomas is happy to be home but utterly unimpressed by any requests to pick up a pencil, whereas Katie misses her friends and was utterly frustrated by slow tech and the inability to interact easily. I should add that both of their teachers are WONDERFUL and did everything in their power to produce a good experience for them - but both needed a lot of cuddles!! . Needless to say - didn’t have the ability to visit anywhere beyond my house and occasionally escaping for a run! . I walked past this little car on an almost daily basis in lockdown, so it was one of those photos I snapped and just shared as I felt like I hadn’t posted in so long. Do you ever feel the pressure you just some SOMETHING?! . I just didn’t feel like I had much to share when we weren’t really doing anything! I know I could’ve technically walked into the city centre or jumped on my bike - but I just remember feeling so worried about being out of the house! . Adios 2020... it’s been erm... memorable?! . Ove Adios 2020... it’s been erm... memorable?! . Overall, it’s obviously had lots that’s far from wonderful but tonight as we sat down for dinner, we asked the kids what they thought had made this year different. . They came up with a wonderful list - starting school, starting upper junior school, holidays to Gairloch, swimming outside, learning to ride a bike, making new friends, spending time with older ones... their list went on and on. . So I don’t have a massive list of resolutions, but I do want to look for the positives. Might be hard to find them at times - but they are there to be found. . This is another location from my top nine of 2020 - which has changed since I started revisiting the locations (you all seemed to like Circus Place in the snow!) I’m delighted that @thecafemilk feature in my to I’m delighted that @thecafemilk feature in my top nine of 2020 for a couple of reasons: a) I love to eat here/grab a take out - it’s 2.5km from my front door to the Sculpture Workshop so a great place for a pick me up before the final dash home. b) During the first lockdown their home deliveries were the highlight of my week - bringing chocolate brownie goodness along with sensible things like flour/yeast! c) Yesterday I lost my keys in the park - house and car - so needless to say I was in a panic because you know... KEYS! But I messaged Cafe Milk and they checked to see if anyone had handed them in AND THEY HAD!! So I had an excuse to visit for the third day running 😁 . It made my top nine of 2020 for two reasons I suspect - it’s a familiar view that (as I said above) is pretty and because I had big gaps between posting during lock down - Instagram always seems to give me hope after time away and then punishes my optimism shortly after 😆 . Next location from my ‘top nine of 2020’ is We Next location from my ‘top nine of 2020’ is Wells Court in Dean Village. . My post from back in February surprised me as I didn’t love it as a shot. But I had spent the week as a gallery attendant for my husband’s art exhibition @mikecrichtonart - so hadn’t really gone anywhere beyond the gallery and a chain coffee shop 🙈 . I thought the exhibition was going to be the start of us getting things up and running with Mike’s art, we sold over half of the pieces and we had two more exhibitions planned, applied (and were accepted) for the Porty Art Walk, and it was great to see Mike with focus! . All of those things were obviously cancelled, and the freedom to spend hours creating art vanished with the advent of ‘home school’ but who knows what the future with now hold?! . I’ve been trying to drink less coffee and cut my caffeine intake a bit. Rosevear introduced me Evening Chai (to me a bit chocolately/spicy - Christmas in a cup) and actually for more festive joy the Christmas Tea is also amazing (although does have caffeine)... so I’ve just spread the jollity throughout the day! .
