Shantify is a joyously inventive blend of pop, rock, and show tunes—all cleverly reimagined as sea shanties. Performed in the atmospheric Palais du Variété at Assembly George Square Gardens, it’s a high-energy, foot-tapping hour that left the whole tent grinning and on their feet.
I went with Tom, who earlier this year went through a phase of listening to sea shanties on repeat. I wasn’t sure what he’d make of the live experience, but from the moment the first harmony rang out, he was utterly wrapped up. The venue has tables around the outer edge, but most people are seated in rows. When I explained to the usher that Tom prefers not to be in a crowd, they kindly let us take a table and made sure the rest of the Assembly team knew, so we wouldn’t be moved. This meant he could shift around in his seat and avoid being too close to the speakers—a small accommodation that made a huge difference.
Reading Tom’s emotions can sometimes be tricky; at times he rested his head on the table while watching and I wasn’t sure if he was really tired or just not enjoying it. But when the show ended, he was unequivocal: “Five stars.” He even asked if we could stream it on his Alexa (sadly, not yet—but here’s hoping that’s temporary!). His only wish was that they could’ve done some Back Street Boys – he has eclectic likes!
I was surprised not to see more children in the audience to be honest – this is something that lots of generations could enjoy. The show itself is irresistible. Six immensely talented singers deliver an eclectic setlist—on our night, AC/DC, Wheatus, and Robbie Williams all got the “Shantify” treatment, and every number was bursting with tight harmonies, theatrical charm, and infectious energy. I could happily have listened to them sing all day and really would like them on my running playlist too!
It’s the first standing ovation I’ve seen at the festival this year, and it was thoroughly deserved. Whether you’re a die-hard sea shanty fan or just in the mood for something fun, polished, and unexpectedly moving, this is one Fringe voyage you’ll be glad you boarded.
