If you’re searching for a different kind of magic show at Edinburgh Fringe 2025, Honest Fraud by Brazilian duo Ricardo Malerbi and Rudi Solon might be just the ticket. This low-key, story-driven performance from the Fundo Falso company is part of the São Paulo Showcase and offers a refreshing change of pace from the high-octane illusions often seen at the Fringe.

Performed in the Dairy Room at Underbelly, Bristo Square, Honest Fraud delivers gentle wonder rather than explosive spectacle. The magicians explore the idea that magic is the only “honest” kind of fraud in a world filled with fake news, scams, and AI-generated illusions. Through clever card tricks, mentalism, and sleight of hand, they build a slow-burning hour that focuses on storytelling over showmanship.

Audience participation plays a big role, and while it does slow the pacing at times, it’s clear those invited on stage – and their friends – thoroughly enjoy the spotlight. One of the most striking moments unfolds entirely in Portuguese, and far from excluding non-speakers, it draws you deeper into the mystery.

This isn’t a “trick-a-minute” performance, despite the show’s description. Instead, it leaves you puzzled in the best way – unable to explain what you’ve just witnessed. The magicians’ easy rapport and commitment to their theme elevate even the more drawn-out sections.

While it may not leave you questioning reality quite as deeply as it promises, Honest Fraud is an engaging, intelligent, and quietly confounding experience that lingers long after the final bow.

A curious, confounding, and contemplative hour – Edinburgh with kids rating – ⭐⭐⭐⭐
