Hayley (otherwise known as Devon Mama) lives in the beautiful South West of England with her husband Dave, and their beautiful son. I also can’t neglect to mention they are also the proud owners of the world’s bounciest dog.  Hayley’s approach to style is reassuringly practical and her beauty just shines through. Here, she shares her speedy make-up routine and secret to hiding tired eyes…

What is your daily skincare routine?

My daily skincare routine is pretty shocking; my skin is pretty tolerant and I abuse that fact so much. I don’t use soap because it dries my skin out, so it’s just water followed up (if I remember) by a touch of moisturiser. I always think about making more effort and buy ridiculously expensive potions only to use them once or twice, I could open a shop with the contents of our cupboard!

That said, I did stick religiously to using Bio-oil when pregnant and I loved it. I just need more time, then I’d have a great routine. Maybe!

Do you wear make-up? What’s your routine?

I don’t wear a huge amount of make-up. If I’m just at home, I’ll pop on moisturiser and then a touch of bronzer or blusher. I can’t live without a bit of either of those!

If I’m off to work then it’s a slightly more jazzed up version of that; a bit of illuminating moisturiser around my eyes, some Vaseline on my lips/eyebrows and possibly a touch of eyeliner.

For a night out, it’s all of that and some mascara… Fancy! I don’t feel like I’ve ever really found my groove with make-up. I’d love to be better at it and really master the ‘natural’ look, maybe that will be one of my challenges this year.

What do you do to style and care for your hair?

I’m an every-other- day kinda gal when it comes to hair washing, although since having a baby I’ve become a huge fan of dry shampoo! Once out of the shower, I’ll towel dry it and then normally blow dry and straighten. I’ve got a TIGI Bedhead ‘Dumb Blonde Smoothing Stuff’ pot which I love, even though I’m a brunette. A tiny amount of that helps smooth down the strays and make my hair more manageable.

The in joke in my family is my inability to brush my hair. It’s just curly enough that it’s always knotted and goes frizzy if I try to brush it. Because of that I’ve been known to go months without brushing it.

In fact, I genuinely can’t remember the last time I did it! Normally I pop it up into a ponytail, a plait or a messy bun but by the end of the day it’s usually half-escaped, there’s no taming it!

What’s your go-to ‘everyday’ outfit?

My everyday outfit now is nearly always jeans, a vest top and a jumper, in the summer I’ll swap in a maxi skirt instead. It’s a style I’ve worn for a long time because it’s pretty forgiving but I’d like to put more effort into what I wear. For work I’ll always wear a dress and either leggings or tights and a pair of boots.

Recently I’ve been trying to lose the pregnancy weight and fit back into the more stylish clothes I had before becoming a mother. I refuse to buy anything new just yet because I’m determined to be back in my ‘nice’ clothes… just wearing something more fitted would be lovely!

Where do you shop?

The majority of my clothes are from places like ASOS, Oasis and Warehouse. I know the fit of their clothes will, nine times out of ten, suit my body shape and their online ordering is nice and easy.

Do you have an all-time favourite item of clothing?

My sunglasses. They hide a multitude of sins, especially now I’m permanently exhausted. I instantly feel more glamorous with them on and more confident, to the point that when I lost them I ended up buying another pair. Which means now I’ve got two identical sets, particularly useful as someone likes to steal them from me!

What was the most expensive item of clothing you’ve ever bought?

My maternity coat from Seraphine. At the time it was a small fortune for me, luckily my mum offered to go halves with me. I’ve worn that coat so many times, I think it’s come down to pennies per wear now. It’s true what they say, sometimes it’s worth the investment of buying something that’s going to last.

How do you change your look for a date night?

Since my hair is usually up, I tend to wear it down if we’re going out, pop on a bit more make-up, some jewellery and wear heels. I love wearing dresses but the majority of places around us are still relatively casual so my outfit would usually be jeans and a dressier top.

What’s your favourite thing about being a Mum?

Having someone that’s part me and part my husband. I love the fact that we’ve created an entire human being out of our love for one another. I can’t get over the fact that if we hadn’t met, I wouldn’t have him. In fact, I could have a completely different baby all together. How mind-blowing is that?!

Speaking of children, how do you like to dress your kids?

He dresses better than I do! I love putting him in classic clothes, no big logos or super-bright colours, just genuinely nice, age appropriate clothes. For the first two months of his life, I literally just dressed him in white baby-grows, there’s something so lovely about a baby looking like a baby!

I’m pretty sure that 90% of his wardrobe is from John Lewis and the rest must be from White Company. I’ll admit to having some tops from Tesco that he wears to nursery as he always comes back as grubby as anything from there! He’s in to everything already so I know it’s only a matter of time before his wardrobe changes to be more ‘dirt-friendly’. In the meantime, I’m making the most of it.

Have you got any ‘life-hacks’ for busy Mums?

Oh god no. My only ‘life hack’ would be to be as organised as possible, especially if you’re going back to work or out for the day. It’s so much easier to have a plan of what you need and food that’s required the night before than it is to race around in the morning. I’m not sure that counts as a life hack though, maybe just common sense?! I don’t know… if you find any, I need to know!

Can you think of an occasion that you felt the most beautiful?

It’s a cliché but my wedding day! I remember thinking beforehand that it was absolute rubbish to feel at your prettiest on your wedding day but it’s the truth! I think it’s a combination of excitement and professional hair and make up that made me feel… radiant. It’s literally the only way I can describe it.

Who is your style icon?

I love Mila Kunis’ style. It’s laid back but she always looks put together. I also love Kate Middleton’s style for a more dressy occasion, I’d love to wear some of those dresses but it just wouldn’t be practical.

Is there anything you want to change about your style?

I’d want to look more polished. There’s a lot of small things I’d like to change; I’d like my hair to be less frizzy, to lose the freckles, to be a bit better at putting outfits together and creating a ‘look’. That said, I don’t hate my style, it suits my life at the moment. There’s no point dressing up beautifully just to end up with a shoulder coated in snot now, is there?

If you’re having a tough day, what do you do to make yourself feel better?

Grab some chocolate, a diet coke (the irony!) and put on some trashy American TV drama. If I’m feeling frustrated I’ll often go for a walk to clear my head, it used to be a run but that seems to have fallen by the wayside!
